Recently, we took a closer look at all the shiny new hotels that are expected to open in Dubai in the coming years. What surprised us there was that Dubai's scene is becoming more "lifestyle" rather than "high-end luxury". Of course, this is Dubai so the hotels will keep time with the city's unofficial credo of "more is more."

However, in Macau, a former Portuguese colony which has exploded in the past decade as a glitzy gambling destination, the city's unofficial credo when it comes to the hotel scene might just be "more is more is more" and "bigger is always best." Even while in the midst of an economic downturn, Macau is adding more and more and more hotel rooms.

Here's a shortlist of the new hotels expected to open in Macau in the very near future. By 2018, there should be over 46,000 new hotel rooms. We're calling it Macau Hotel Madness.

· St. Regis: Due to open on December 1 in the Sands Cotai Central district, the St. Regis will have 400 guestrooms and suites, along with a massive Iridium Spa on the 38th floor and a signature St. Regis bar. It will operate closely with its nearby sister property, the Sheraton Macao.

· JW Marriott Macau: As we reported last month, the JW Marriott will have 1,015 rooms when it opens in May within the second part of the massive Galaxy Resort complex.

· Ritz-Carlton Macau: This, too, will open in the Galaxy Resort complex on the same day as its sibling, the JW Marriott. However, this will be a very small, all-suite property with just 254 suites.

· Studio City Hotel: Located within the Melco Crown's forthcoming Studio City resort, an Art Deco/Hollywood-inspired theme park, this will have two towers--a Celebrity Tower and a Star Tower--that will total 1,600 rooms.

· The City of Dreams Hotel: The existing City of Dreams resort, also owned by Melco Crown, already has a Grand Hyatt, a Hard Rock and the Crown Towers but they will soon add this 780-room mind-bending htoel from architect Zaha Hadid in 2017

· The Parisian: The same company that built The Venetian in Las Vegas and Macau (The Sands) are now working on The Parisian, which will have a replica Eiffel Tower, 3,000 rooms and suites, gaming space, and plenty of F&B and entertainment options.

· MGM Cotai: Set to open in 2016, this newest MGM Resort will have 1,600 hotel rooms and a casino with 500 gaming tables and 2,500 slot machines. It will also have private, invite-only Mansion accommodations on site which will be bigger and better than the Vegas incarnation.

· Lisboa Palace: It might be known as the Lisboa Palace but when this new resort opens in 2017, it will be better known as the place of Karl Lagerfeld's fashion-branded hotel. Karl's resort will have 270 rooms, entirely designed by Karl. It will join two other hotels in the complex--Lisboa Palace Hotel and Palazzo Versace Macau--for a total of 2,000 hotel rooms. Lagerfeld and Versace together again? Yes, indeed.
